Forest Ecosystems
Forests store large amounts of carbon by plants converting it through photosynthesis, releasing oxygen and forming wood from the resulting carbon compounds. The carbon stock is distributed between above-ground and below-ground biomass. Near-natural forests also play a major role as a habitat for many species of flora and fauna, improve the local climate and landscape hydrology, are recreational areas for people and provide the renewable raw material wood.
The effects of the drought years since 2018 are yet to be recorded by the current National Forest Inventory. Forests that are far removed from nature are more susceptible to damage. The systematic conversion and reforestation should ultimately lead to the development of climate-resilient forest ecosystems through biodiversity and structural richness. The aim is to expand the forest area within Germany, which will also contribute to achieving the goals of the EU Biodiversity Strategy 2030 and the EU Forest Strategy.
