Rivers, Lakes and Floodplains

Intact waterbodies are important elements for biodiversity. Watercourses and their floodplains in particular serve as central components of biotope networks. However, due to river straightening and the use of floodplains as farmland or settlement areas, only a few floodplains remain in a good ecological condition.

As climate change progresses, extremes related to water management are becoming more frequent, with dry summers and droughts on one hand and heavy rainfall events with flooding on the other. The protection of water bodies and floodplains is advantageous. Habitats will be preserved  for animal and plant species. Moreover, floodplains filters and buffer water in the landscape, which acts as protection against both droughts and flooding.
