Settlements and Traffic Areas
Green spaces, such as parks, urban forests or green belts play a decisive role for the microclimate in urban areas. They filter the air, provide shade and cool through transpiration. Large or connected areas can form cold and fresh air corridors. Additionally other plant and animal species also settle here, making them worthy of protection, especially old trees. Therefore, new green spaces are required, especially in heavily sealed areas.
Outside of settlement areas, these ecosystems are much more extensive. However, they are frequently fragmented by human infrastructure. The interconnected network of individual ecosystems is disrupted by cities roads, railways and highways. Here it is necessary to restore connectivity, for example through the construction of green bridges, in order to stabilise the ecosystems in the interest of natural climate protection.
