EO4Nature

The national portal for monitoring and applications in nature conservation and natural climate protection

What is EO4Nature?

EO4Nature is being developed by LUP – Luftbild Umwelt Planung GmbH (LUP) on behalf of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN). It builds on the expertise of more than 20 partners from science, industry, and public administration.

EO4Nature:

  • Uses modern AI methods to provide reliable information for planning processes and ANK monitoring.
  • Connects knowledge, Earth observation, and geoinformation, and offers extensive training materials.
  • Provides open communication forums for all users on topics related to natural climate protection.
  • Will be available from early 2028 as a central, official platform of BMUKN—permanently and free of charge.

“With EO4Nature, you can plan measures for natural climate protection and monitor their implementation. Explore your region—for example, the development of heat in your city or the condition of your forest. More than 20 services answer questions using remote sensing data. Your planning case, your region, your individual parameters, your recurring questions: as a registered user, create your own dashboard and combine your own data with EO4Nature information. Download and share results.”

Background – The ANK

The Federal Action Plan on Nature-based Solutions for Climate and Biodiversity (ANK), introduced by the German government in 2023, establishes a clear timeline and specific measures to improve ecosystems in Germany and enhance their resilience and contribution to climate protection. The first seven fields of action of the ANK focus on key ecosystems and landscape functions:

Fields of Action
  1. Protection of intact peatlands and rewetting
  2. Near-natural water balance with vibrant rivers, lakes and floodplains
  3. Seas and coasts
  4. Wilderness and protected areas
  5. Forest ecosystems
  6. Soils as carbon stocks
  7. Nature-based climate action in settlement and transport areas
  8. The eighth field of action is dedicated to data collection, monitoring, modelling and reporting. Particularly, section 8.9 emphasizes the use of remote sensing to monitor the conditions and changes of these ecosystems as well as their contributions to climate protection.
